An Altar In the World: Wrapping it Up

I think I was supposed to have posted this last week, but you all have been doing a fine job in the comments section. Now that we're all on the same page (hi Mary!) let's wrap it up for now.

Are people finished? I've had many say that while easy to read, this is a book that leaves itself open to lots of thinking. I've enjoyed the opportunity to go back through it, even though I read it for the first time earlier this year. What are you left with after finishing? Any general impressions that you'll be taking away? Or maybe smaller, more specific points are sticking with you?

Thanks in advance for participating in this online book discussion. I've enjoyed the opportunity, and while I missed the in-person contact, given people's schedules this was a big improvement over nothing at all. Enjoy the summer, and keep reading!

  1. I've enjoyed this so far too! I'll get back to you when I've finished. Like I said, I've slacked a bit. I'll get there though. I've really enjoyed the chat though. Interesting to read everyone's thoughts and not be told my ideas were "wrong"... :)

    Later dudes! ;)

  2. I am reading about the Sabbath - really have to rethink what/who I am. I will finish reading the book, put it down for a bit and reread as I think I have missed a lot, gotten some and a lot of room for growth. This has been fun and while not as good as in person - much better than not doing anything. I have enjoyed it and the challenges of doing something new and different.
Thanks to all of your for sharing.

  3. OK--I've slacked off a bit too. It will be hectic this week as I prepare at work and home to go off to a conference next week--San Antonio in July, very hot-ugh. Anyway, I am enjoying the book. While my faith is strong, I have not been what I thought was a religious person. Reading the book, I realize I may be a bit more religious than I thought as some of the things I have thought. It's really OK to say NO to going to church on a Sunday (once in a while)...Chapter 7 on Purpose had a quote that really reached out to me; "When the music you love to play becomes the music you have to play to pay the rent, your heart can suffer from alienation of affection." Every once in a while getting up to go to church seems like just one more thing I have to do, one more demand on my time; that's when I need some a lone time to regroup and absorb God's peace. I think God smiles more when we give our love freely.
Hope every one is enjoying a safe and sane 4th of July. Jan Barrett
